A narrow gorge carved by the Tsauchab River, at the gateway to Sossusvlei.
Sesriem Canyon is a narrow gorge about a kilometre long and up to 30 metres deep, cut by the Tsauchab River through layers of sediment near the Sesriem entrance to the Namib-Naukluft National Park. Its name comes from the six lengths of leather rope early settlers needed to lower a bucket to the water at the bottom.
A short walk along the canyon floor offers shade and cool air, a welcome break after the dunes. It is a few minutes from the park gate, so it fits easily into an afternoon after a morning at Sossusvlei.
