A white clay pan of dead camel thorn trees ringed by giant red dunes.
Deadvlei is a white clay pan a short walk from Sossusvlei, surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world. The camel thorn trees that stand on its floor died centuries ago, when the dunes cut the pan off from the river, and the dry air has preserved them ever since.
The walk in from the parking area takes about 20 minutes over soft sand. Go early in the morning, when the light on the dunes is at its best and before the heat builds, and allow time simply to stand among the trees.
