One of the largest canyons in the world, in Namibia's deep south.
The Fish River Canyon is around 160 kilometres long and up to 550 metres deep, and it is often described as the second largest canyon in the world. From the viewpoints on the eastern rim near Hobas, the river winds far below through layers of rock, some of them more than a billion years old.
The canyon is at its best at sunrise or sunset from the main viewpoint, and lodges near the rim offer drives and walks. The famous five-day hike along the canyon floor is only open in the cooler months, from May to mid-September.
