A full day on the Skeleton Coast: shipwrecks, seal colonies and dunes meeting the ocean.
The Skeleton Coast takes its name from the whale bones and shipwrecks that once lined its beaches, and a day out along it is unlike any other drive in Namibia. Cold Atlantic fog rolls over empty beaches, dunes run down to the waterline and Cape fur seals crowd the rocks.
From the camps in the Hoanib valley, the excursion follows the dry riverbed through the dunes to the coast, often with a stop at a seal colony and a picnic lunch by the sea. From Swakopmund, day trips head north along the coast road past shipwrecks to the seal colony at Cape Cross.
