Botswana's sacred hills, with thousands of ancient rock paintings.
Tsodilo Hills rise out of the Kalahari in north-western Botswana, west of the Okavango Panhandle. The hills are sacred to the San and Hambukushu people and hold more than 4,500 rock paintings, which is why Tsodilo became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in Botswana, in 2001.
A visit is usually a day or half-day excursion by light aircraft or road from a camp in the Panhandle, walking the trails between the painted rock shelters with a local guide.
