Stargazing

Some of the darkest skies on earth, far from any city lights.

The experience

Stargazing at a glance

Namibia's dry air, high plateaus and tiny population make its night skies some of the clearest anywhere. The NamibRand Nature Reserve was declared Africa's first International Dark Sky Reserve, and on a moonless night the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon.

Many desert lodges have telescopes and guides who lead astronomy sessions after dinner, and some have skybeds or star decks where you can sleep outside. The best skies come around new moon, when the Magellanic Clouds and the Southern Cross stand out clearly.
