A small harbour town with German colonial buildings on Namibia's wild south coast.
Lüderitz sits on a rocky bay on the southern coast, cut off from the rest of Namibia by the Namib Desert, and its brightly painted German colonial buildings give it a character all its own. The town grew with the diamond rush of the early 1900s and is still a base for fishing and diamond mining in the south.
Visitors come for the Kolmanskop ghost town, the Lüderitz Peninsula with its lagoons and flamingos, and fresh oysters from the bay. It combines well with the Fish River Canyon and the drive west from Aus, where wild horses roam the desert.
