Nature drives and sundowners among the long red dunes of the Kalahari.
The dunes of the Namibian Kalahari run in long parallel ridges separated by grassy valleys, and they are held in place by grass and trees rather than shifting like the Namib dunes to the west. Their deep red colour comes from the iron oxide that coats the sand grains.
Lodges on private reserves take guests out on nature drives across the dunes, looking for oryx, springbok, wildebeest and smaller animals, and stop on a crest for sundowners as the dunes turn crimson. It is a gentle, beautiful way to start or end a trip.
