Rugged mountains, ancient rock art and desert-adapted elephant and rhino.
Damaraland is a vast, rugged region of red rock mountains, flat-topped hills and dry riverbeds between the Skeleton Coast and Etosha. It is one of the most striking landscapes in Namibia, and it is where desert-adapted elephant and black rhino roam free outside any national park.
Days here are spent tracking wildlife along the riverbeds with experienced guides, visiting the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein, the Organ Pipes and Burnt Mountain, and meeting the communities who run the local conservancies. Most itineraries spend two or three nights here on the way from the coast to Etosha.
