A hillside of dark, scorched-looking rock near Twyfelfontein that glows at dawn and dusk.
Burnt Mountain lies a short drive from Twyfelfontein in Damaraland. It is a hill of shale and limestone that was baked and darkened by volcanic activity millions of years ago, and its purple, black and red slopes look as if they have been scorched by fire.
It is at its best in the low light of early morning or late afternoon, when the colours deepen. Most visitors combine it with the Organ Pipes nearby and the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein on the same outing.
