Namibia's small, friendly capital, and the start of most journeys.
Windhoek is Namibia's capital and largest city, set in the central highlands at about 1,650 metres above sea level. It is small, clean and easy-going, with German colonial landmarks such as the Christuskirche alongside modern cafés, craft markets and restaurants.
Most safaris start and end here, as Hosea Kutako International Airport is about 45 minutes from town. A night in Windhoek on arrival is a good way to rest after a long flight, collect your vehicle and set out fresh the next morning.
