5 Perfect Spots for a Sundowner in Namibia

After a long day trekking through the Fish River Canyon, exploring wildlife at Etosha National Park, or experiencing any of the other incredible sights Namibia has to offer there’s nothing better than kicking back with your favourite beverage in hand and witnessing an epic African sunset.

Sundowners are the perfect way to end the day, just before you tuck into a scrumptious dinner. Namibia offers a plethora of incredible vantage points and spots that are perfect for sunset seekers.

In winter, the Namibian sun sets behind the horizon earlier, sometimes just after 5 pm. It can set as late as 8.30 pm in the Namibian summer, so make sure you’ve settled in your position before the light fades!

If you’ve booked a Namibia safari tour and are eagerly counting down the days before you jet off, or if you’re considering booking a safari adventure soon, keep in mind these five incredible spots for a sundowner in Namibia below.

Windhoek

Windhoek

The cosmopolitan capital Windhoek may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about where to watch a dreamy Namibian sunset. However, don’t be fooled because this city offers incredible vantage points and fantastic cocktail bars!

For excellent service, rooftop bars, and tasty drinks, head to Avani Stratos SkyBar or the Am Weinberg Sky Lounge; these locations are worthy of an Instagram photoshoot!

Another great place for a sundowner is The Heinitzberg Hotel, one of Windhoek’s five historical castles. From your vantage point on Heinitzberg St, you can look up as the sun gives way to the velvet night sky. Heinitzberg is also notorious with wine buffs, boasting a glorious cellar that houses a scrumptious collection of vintages. Book a romantic dinner here to complete a magical night.

Little Kulala Camp

Little Kulala Camp

Away from the capital’s streets, head to Little Kulala camp, a luxurious desert retreat located in the vast and private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. This region is the gateway to Namibia’s epic sand dunes, so you’ll be surrounded by incredible landscapes as you eagerly wait for the sun to set.

As late afternoon approaches, you’ll journey away in a private vehicle to a remote and dramatic spot where you can enjoy your favourite tipple and watch day give way to night.

Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park

Characterised by dry sprawling salt pans and numerous waterholes that attract an abundance of wildlife, Etosha National Park is the ultimate place for a Namibian sundowner.

When the fiery red sun slowly disappears behind the horizon, it’s a truly magical sight, and there are numerous camps and lodges in the area that can supply those all important drinks!

Okaukuejo and Halali are two of the most popular campsites in Etosha, each offering guests a range of plush amenities and services to make their Namibian safari experience special. Halali is the quieter of the two camps, and you can kick back here with a cocktail in total peace and serenity.

Swakopmund

Swakopmund

Swakopmund, nestled on Namibia’s Skeleton Coast, is another incredible destination for a sundowner. Gazing at the sunset by the sea always adds an extra dimension, particularly as the sun’s golden rays settle on the vast blue Atlantic Ocean.

The Skeleton Coast region is home to an incredible variety of marine life, including the famous Cape fur seals and pink flamingos. So, if you’re staying in this area, take plenty of pictures!

As for the sundowner, grab a blanket and choose a nice spot by the shore, or visit one of the many excellent restaurants in the area, and watch the sunset with a glass of bubbly. You may even catch a glimpse of a great white shark or dolphin before the night sky appears!

Spitzkoppe

Spitzkoppe

Spitzkoppe, with its 120-million-year-old granite peaks, is one of Namibia’s most famous attractions.

A hugely popular self-drive safari destination, if you are camping or planning to visit this area, you’ll be greeted by a truly magical sunset.

Pitch up beside the campfire before the late afternoon and watch as the pink evening sky highlights the magnificent red dunes and towering peaks. When the sun finally sets, you are in for another treat; a majestic blanket of stars will appear, and you’ll be transfixed on the sky until morning.

Since Spitzkoppe is isolated and remote, it may be best to pack your favourite tipple and bring it with you for this sundowner!
