June is early winter and firmly dry. Days are sunny and pleasantly warm, around 20°C in Windhoek and warmer in Etosha, while nights are cold, and in the desert and the Kalahari they can drop close to freezing. The sky is clear almost every day, and the stars at night are spectacular.
With the bush drying out, the animals gather at the waterholes and Etosha becomes the classic dry season safari. South African school holidays usually begin late in the month and the European summer holidays follow in July, so June is a good time to travel before the busiest weeks.
