October is the hottest stretch of the dry season. Days are hot, into the high 20s in Windhoek and well into the 30s in Etosha and the desert, and nights are mild. The landscape is bare and dusty, and in the second half of the month clouds begin to build in the afternoons, with the odd early thunderstorm in the north and east.
For wildlife it is superb: the waterholes are the only water for miles, and the animals come to drink in big numbers. Plan game drives for the early morning and late afternoon, and spend the heat of the day in the shade, by the pool or at a waterhole hide.
