December is early summer and the start of the main rainy season. Days are hot, around 31°C in Windhoek, with thunderstorms building on many afternoons in the centre and the north, while the south and the coast stay mostly dry. The days are the longest of the year, with the sun setting at about half past seven.
The country greens quickly after the first good rains, many animals have their young, and the birding is excellent. Game in Etosha becomes more spread out as the bush fills with water. The holidays make the coast and some lodges busy from mid December to early January, and the rest of the month is quiet.
