August is late winter. It is almost completely dry, the days warm up steadily through the month, and the nights, while still cold, are less bitter than in July. In the second half of the month the wind picks up in places, and afternoons in the desert can be dusty.
Game viewing is close to its peak, with the animals tied to the waterholes and the bush at its thinnest. The European summer holidays make it the busiest month of the year, so plan and book early, or look at the private reserves around Etosha for quieter game drives.
